How to make a pass/fail inspection checklist
Every check in a checklist starts as a Condition, answered "No issues" or "Requires attention". Rename those answers to "Pass" and "Fail", and your checklist reads as pass/fail on site and on the report.
Make a check pass/fail
- Open "Inspection templates" from the menu, and open the template, or start one from our template library.
- Open an area, and select "Add check" or click a check to edit it.
- Leave the type on Condition, and rename its two answers: "No issues" to "Pass", and "Requires attention" to "Fail".
- Turn on N/A if the check won't always apply, like a smoke alarm in a room that doesn't need one.
Make pass/fail your default
Once you've renamed a check's answers, select "Save these as your defaults for Condition checks". Every Condition check you add afterwards starts as Pass and Fail, in your templates, when you edit an inspection on the web, and in the app (v1.11.13 or later). Checks you've already made keep their answers until you rename them.
On site and on the report
- Pass. The inspector marks the check "Pass".
- Fail. The inspector marks it "Fail", then adds a note, photos, or video showing what's wrong.
- On the report. Each check shows "Pass" or "Fail". One failed check marks its whole area "Requires attention", with the note and photos beside it.
When you need more than pass/fail
Not everything is a pass or a fail. Sometimes you need to record what's there, like the heating type, the rooms where a smoke alarm was tested, or a meter reading. Change the check's type to one of these instead:
- Pick one. One option from a list you write, like "Electric", "Gas", or "Heat pump".
- Pick many. Every option from your list that applies, like the rooms where a smoke alarm was tested.
- Text. A written answer, like a serial number.
- Number. A count or reading, like a meter reading in kWh.
For every option, read how to build an inspection template, or see condition checklists in action.
